ECU - Electronic Control Unit

In terminology of VW-group it's any electronic device, which has been carried out some logic function. Sometimes it looks like nonsens - even simple relay can be called ECU.

The coding of Electronic Control Unit used for explain the ECU where it is and what "neighbours" does it have. Very often on modern cars the coding is crossed with adaptation.

Adaptation of the Electronic Control Unit serves to explain to the ECU with whom and how to talk (If we have started to speak allegories) and serves as storehouse of various adjustable parameters. ( part of memory in the Control Unit which can be changed via internal software )

Measured Values Blocks ( MWB ) various parameters being inbound or calculated. Considering to value of MWB Electronic Control Unit, trying to "control"... Using of MWB allows you ( if you know the basic parameters ) to find out "close to boundary" or temporarily arising ( intermittent, sporadic ) malfunctions and many other useful things at competent use.

Procedure for replacing control unit -J104 for ESP or steering angle sensor:

 

After installation of a new steering angle sensor -G85 or a new control unit -J104, the ESP system must be recoded.A Removing and installing control unit -J104 see Workshop Manual, Brake System, Rep.Gr.-45

Following coding, the steering angle sender must be calibrated immediately and the ESP drive and system test carried out.

K Note: The new control units are shipped uncoded from the spares store, which means as a general rule the coding of the defective control unit is valid for the new control unit (with same control unit number and index).

Calibration of steering angle sensor

Requirement: The chassis geometry must be OK.

- Ignition on

- Turn the steering wheel approximately 30 degrees to left or right and back again until the front wheels are positioned straight ahead and the steering wheel is horizontal (tolerance +/- 4.5 degrees).

- Enter address word 03 Brake electronics

- Call up coding II and enter login code 40168

- Select function 04 Basic setting

- Enter digit 1 (steering angle sender -G85 is calibrated)

K Note: Between control unit coding and calibration of the steering angle do not quit diagnosis or switch off the ignition. Otherwise the whole process will have to be repeated.

First the login code must be entered, and then the coding code.

The login and code number comprises four different variants (body, brakes, engine, gearbox). The brake can be defined visually or by way of the production number (see Audi Service Plan or label in spare wheel well).

Define the login and encoding code based on the following tables.

The first digit is always a 0.

Log in with function 11 (for login code see table below).

Perform ESP coding with function 07 (for coding see table below).

KNote:

Vehicles with 6-cylinder diesel, 1LG brake system and Multitronic gearbox have the following special codes Login code: 7499 and coding code: 6399
