ECU - Electronic Control Unit

In terminology of VW-group it's any electronic device, which has been carried out some logic function. Sometimes it looks like nonsens - even simple relay can be called ECU.

The coding of Electronic Control Unit used for explain the ECU where it is and what "neighbours" does it have. Very often on modern cars the coding is crossed with adaptation.

Adaptation of the Electronic Control Unit serves to explain to the ECU with whom and how to talk (If we have started to speak allegories) and serves as storehouse of various adjustable parameters. ( part of memory in the Control Unit which can be changed via internal software )

Measured Values Blocks ( MWB ) various parameters being inbound or calculated. Considering to value of MWB Electronic Control Unit, trying to "control"... Using of MWB allows you ( if you know the basic parameters ) to find out "close to boundary" or temporarily arising ( intermittent, sporadic ) malfunctions and many other useful things at competent use.

Reading measured value block

The following measured values are displayed:

Measured value block 001:

J Wheel speed front left

J Wheel speed front right

J Wheel speed rear left

J Wheel speed rear right

Measured value block 002 only for control units with index 379D, 379M, 379E, 379G and 379K

J Starting speed front left

J Starting speed front right

J Starting speed rear left

J Starting speed rear right

When the vehicle is stopped the tester always displays 255 km/h.

Measured value block 003:

J Brake light switch (tester readout unpressed or pressed)

J Brake warning lamp (tester readout off or on)

J ABS warning lamp (tester readout off or on)

J TCS/ESP warning lamp (tester readout off or on)

Measured value block 004:

J Steering angle (specification when vehicle stopped +/- 4.5, when the steering wheel is at full left lock a positive preceding sign is displayed; at full right lock a negative sign)

J Lateral acceleration (specification when vehicle stopped +/- 1.5m/s)

J Yaw rate (specification when vehicle stopped +/- 2.5%s)

J Vacant

Measured value block 005:

J Brake pressure sender (specification when brake not pressed +/- 7 bar)

J Steering angle sender status (possible tester readouts: initialised; not initialised; implausible)

J Vacant

J Vacant

Measured value block 006 for front-wheel drive vehicles

J Low pressure vacuum chamber (-1000mbar...0mbar)

J Low pressure in work chamber (-1000mbar...0mbar)

Readout +1000 mbar means: Fault band or open electrical circuit

J Vacant

J Vacant

Measured value block 006 for four-wheel drive vehicles

J Longitudinal acceleration sender (specification when vehicle stopped +/- 1.5 m/s; in forward acceleration the value rises steadily; in backward acceleration the value also rises steadily, but with a negative preceding sign)

J Vacant

J Vacant

J Vacant

Measured value block 007:

JESP/TCS button (possible tester readouts: pressed and unpressed)

J Vacant

J Vacant

J Vacant

Measured value block 010: Only for control units with index 379Q/AA, 379R/AB, 517R/AC and 517S/AD

J Trailer (possible readouts on tester Yes and No, only with combination stabilisation active)

J Windscreen wiper (possible readouts on tester: on and off)

J Driver's door ( only for vehicles with hill-start aid , PR no. UG1, possible readouts on tester: open and closed)

J Reverse gear ( only for vehicles with hill-start aid, PR no. UG1, possible readouts on tester: on and off)

Measured value block 16: Only on vehicles with tyre pressure monitor, PR no. 7K6.

J TPM kilometre reading pressure warning (when 65535 km is exceeded the following formula applies):

Value in measured value block 16 zone 1 * 65535 + value in measured value block 16 zone 2

J TPM kilometre reading pressure warning

Measured value block 17 only on vehicles with tyre pressure monitor, PR no. 7K6.

J TPM kilometre reading initialisation (when 65535 km is exceeded the following formula applies):

Value in measured value block 17 zone 1 * 65535 + value in measured value block 17 zone 2.

J TPM kilometre reading initialisation

Measured value block 018

J TPM button (only on vehicles with PR no. 7K6, possible readouts on tester: unpressed and pressed)

J Handbrake status (only on vehicles with hill-start aid, PR no. UG1, possible readouts on tester: unpressed and pressed)

J Belt detection driver (only on vehicles with hill-start aid, PR no. UG1, possible readouts on tester: yes and no)

Measured value block 125:

JCAN signal from engine control unit

JCAN signal from steering angle sender

JCAN signal from four-wheel drive control unit

JCAN signal from gearbox control unit (automatic gearbox only)

Measured value block 126:

JCAN signal from dash panel insert

JCAN signal from gateway

JCAN signal from immobilizer

JCAN signal from power steering

Possible readouts: 1 or 0, (If a 1 is shown on the tester the value is OK; if 0, n.OK.

If a 1 is displayed, a CAN message is sent from the relevant control unit.

If the tester shows a 0, the CAN message is interrupted.

In such cases read the fault memory of the relevant control unit.
